The Mysterious Drowning of Natalie Wood

ABOUT THIS EPISODE

Hello and welcome back to did you lockthe door o the podcast, my name 's Payton Reefe, and today I'm joined byanother one of my best friends, Kelsey hi. Today we are going to discuss the usual circumstances surrounding nNatali Wood Tef, so Natalie was born on July twentieth, O one thousand ninehundred and tirty eight in San Francisco, California. That would makeher canser her parents were Russian immigrants, soher original name was Metalia Nikolevna, Zak, caengo beautiful. I have a Russian minor, so I should aeenable to say that much better than I did, but her mom's name Wis Maria and she alwaysdreamed of having a daughter that would become a famous actress. So she startedgetting Madali into acting right away. Natalie would appear in her first film, called tomorrow forever at only the age of five a I saw an interview with herwhere she said that she actually couldn't read yet at the time, so shememorized her lions by having them read to her over and over as a child. Hermom once took her to see a psycic who told her that she would both become abig star and also die by drowning. She warned her to be careful of water, alsome, merry intempting, to say to a child. Are you serious ye see? I've heard this case before, but Ididn't know that Ha Makonderr yeah when she was. I was like six years old orsomething like baby, my shit, so both these premonitions, like wesaid, would become true and at age ten. All the set of a movie called the GreenPromise. A Bridge would clap beneath her and send her plummeting into thewater, and she would break her wrist in the process. She came out of thisincident, obviously even more terrified. She was so terrified of water, in factthat even the thought of washing her hair scaret her so s, mother movies, that she startedwere miracle on thirty. Fourth Street atd only age, eight. She also startedin reble without a cause opposite James Dean, which is really coolther, twoincredible actors and hat Wa onethousand, nine hundred and fity five, and she would earn an Academy Award nomination for her role in that filmNatalie had been infatuated with fellow actor Robert Wagner since she met himat age, ten o yeah, and he was actually eighteen when they met soh and the two would begin dating as soonas she turned eighteen yeah. He would sure nothing was going on before thatit, so they had actually originally beenset up by studio executives to earn them both publicity, but they dideventually fall in love. They would marry I one thousand nine hundred andfifty seven but divorce. I one thousand nine hundred and sixty two. They wouldboth go on to marry other people and eventually leave those other people toget back together and when remarried, ten years later, N, one thousand ninehundred and seventy two ID they have ne kids. Yes, they did so natalie had onedaughter with her exhusband and then another one with Wagner once they gotmarried. This second time, oh and Wadner, would raise both his stepdaughter and his daughter, like they were, like the same idnt treat the many differently yes oay. SoI said before that woat had earned an Oscar nomination for her role andrebble without a cause. She would. I know she would also earn two more knomsfor a movie called splendor in the grass and a movie called love with aproper stranger. However, in one...

...thousand nine hundred and sixty five, amovie called inside Daisy Clover, starring wood would come out and itwould be a absolute bomb at the box office. Unfortunately, so she quitacting for a few years, but eventually she would return to the screen with afilm called Bob and Carroll and Ted and Alic in one thousand nine hundred andsixty nine, a movie that was described as a sex comedy. What's all I knowabout I've, never seen it, but I like that description. Okay, so we're goingto get to the incident now of the weekend that she died. So not only woad. Her husband, Robert Wagner Fellow aftor, Christopher Walkan and captain andfamily friend, Dennis Dabern, were away for a weekend yacht auing in SansaCatalina Island in California in November, one thousand, nine hundredand eighty one. This is actually the week right after Thanksgiving. How didthe get her ot a yacht right? I always wonder that too. She was so scared ofwater, but her and Robert were on that yacht. All the time like she said shewas like perrifying watching her hair and you get her on a yacht. I know athat makes no sense to me. I have no idea so Walkan wasjoining them, because himand Natalie would were filming a science fiction movie called brainstormat the time and they had become quite good friends, so she invited them. Sheinvited him to come out and following dinner at a place called dougs harborreef, wood, Wimar Walkan and the captain allboarded the boat and the three actors wore reporded to have been white.Intoxicated at this point and Wagner already had jealousy issues, but theyonly got worse when he was drunk, and he owe he had reportedly not been happywith what's behavior over the weekend. He said that her and Walkin were beingvery flirty and it was pissing him off. So Wood and wagener were reported toget into several ferocious alcohol field arguments over the course of theweekend. One Night Captain Dabern even took what ashore the yachts dingy sothat her and winer could cool off and be away from one another and theslippbe the night before she died and reportedly dabern would actually lieabout this incident to the police initially, but once he was faced withevidence that they did in fact go ashore to stay in a hotel. He wouldchange his story and admit that they did so that's weird, that's yeah any time someone changes thei storyever, even if it changes to something like a little bit better. That justnever sits right with me and a such a weird thing to lie about it. Like kindof makes me think he was trying to make the moves onher or something probablyyeah. So there were two witnesses that were out on about near the yacht thatwood and Wackner were staying on. Their names were John Payne and Marilyn Wayne, and they reported here ing yelling around midnight. However, they knewthere was another boat in the area, throwing a party at the same time, sothey thought nothing of the yelling. They thought o people are just drunkand having fun. Marilyn Waynmogh specifically reported that she heard awoman yell help me someone. Please help me around midnight the same time. Theyheard the other yelling, which I would not personally contribute to a party. I I didn't wast that long as Oh they'rejust drunk they're party. No, if someone' screaming like help me someoneplease help me, there might be mighbe something going on. So Robert Wagner reports that, on thatnight, he and Christopher Walkin got into a political discussion. However, there was quote no anger or violence. He states that woud seems bored withthe topic and left the two men and when Wagner went to kiss her good nightabout an hour after she had left them. He found that she was missing at one thirty in the morning a distresscall was made from the yacht stating that wood had disappeared. HoweverWadner, according to the captain, did...

...not want him to make a stress call. Hesaid he didn't want to make too much of a big deal. CIS Life was missing, yeahin the middle of the night and she's terrified of water, but t's Notican'tfind her out a boat. There's, not there's really no a she o go besidesthe water. I know. I know this, that's not a big deal to his. He is not making himself look good, ohhe's rea. So what body would be found at seventhirty in the morning onNovember Twenty Ninh, when she was found, she was wearing only a nightgown,a heavy coat and socks. The dinny that belongs to their yachtwas found only about two hundred yards from her body. Her blood alcohol level was point onefour and it was originally assumed that she had attempted to leave the boat onthe dingy fell into the water and accidentally drowned. Yeah Point one:Four: She be wrong it wrong, so hers e Yeah, I don't how died she operate a Doi likeHowp, get it all the way off there if she's, like hise rout for sure, but Ialso think that if she was that drunk then she might have just been mad atRobert and wanted to get off the boat. I mean it sounds like something I woulddo to Beyeah. Finally like be like there's a Dinny, I'm gettingout of here, yeah, exactly especially if she's been fighting with him like, but she also was terrified of water. Did that did the alcohol just like? Did it help put the fear? Did it I'msure it WOUSD helped with the fear yeah, because sometimes alcohol makes me feellike invinsible, so that is Umy. Fear levels do shrink, so there were bruises on her arms andlegs, as well as a cut on one of her cheeks, and there were scratchmarks onthe side of the dinnity that suggested she had tried to climb back aboard, which is such a scary detail. I neen that and that's tote a my stomach, yeah ifeel E, so bad for hers if it's likeshe had to scratch. hearde now to like leave marks becauld like I feel like F,I scratch something just like like coo yeah, it's not going to do much, but no,she must have been and hitting the water probably soberedher up to so then she's realizing, what's happening yeah. So awful. Do you know how big the Tinghe was? I've seen pictures of it, but never next to anything. So I can't getlike a grasp of it because then she could have like held on to the side atleast yeah right, upt, your head above water. I don't know the concept of likeanyone. Drowning is always very odd to, and I feel so bad for saying this, butlike swim, I hon't that's so bad ithere's, so manycases of drowning and, like my mind, cannot wrap found them all the time. Iknow not. Everyone can swim but growing up in Florida. So the original medicalf Saminer didreport that he thought she had died because of hypothermia and exhaustion. So maybe she was trying to hold on to the dingy and then she just couldn'tafter a while. Oh my God, like Titana Yeah She's Leo Fuythe, medical examiner, alsoetheorized that when she fell in her coat, had become soaked and heavy, butdue to her being drunk shed, not thought to take it off, so that wouldhave weightd her down as well. Oh Yeah Lannawood, who is Madalie's pister, says that she does not believe her sister would ever have gote to shoredress, simply in a nightgown and socks, and normally I would agree becauseshe's a movie star she's very like...

...everyone knows who she is yet point one four OCO level yeah you do things that you definitelywouldn't normally do so. I just I don't think we can assume that she was in herright mind. No, it's no saying yeah. She wasn'tbud. The theory put forward by Wagner isthat wood was bothered by the sound of the dingy bumping into the yacht, something that he said she'd complained about before and when attempting to tiethe dingy closer to the boat, so that I wouldn't be able to move she slippedand fell in this is questioned by people who saythat a robber dingy would not have made enough noise bumping up against a boatto to bother n Natali and also that theAlgi in the place that Wagner claimed she would have slipped lookedcompletely untouched. Would shewould think like if sheslipped and took a big fall. YEU would see it in the algi yeah deyihly. Youwould probably see it on her coat ton on her socks. If it didn't wash away. I don't know Y, I migh be a little biased, but I didn'treally like fuck with him to begin with, and now I'm like kind of yeah itis interesting, so captain daburn would many yearsafter the incident come forward. Saying that Wagner had flown into a jealousrage, the night that woud died so much so that he had snashed a wine bottleand accued Christopher Walkerando trying to sleep with his wife. He also claims that when the couplewere arguing, he heard the dingy being untied followed by silence. He thenstates that Wagner came up to him around eleen thirty PM sweatingprofusely, see he's really not looking good to me. Wadner also, reportedly, like I saidearlier discouraged, all efforts suggested by Daveron to look for wood, including calling for help and turning on the floodlights is it back to thatlike he didn't want? How do you want to search for his missing life Mana boatwhen she was terrified of water? I can't get over that. He knew wher.Could she? Oh, my God, that'll bee nome? The onlyreplaces you can't go it she's on the boat jhes in the water gnna hell. Is She where the hell couldshe be besides? Oh my God and man. Interestingly enough in his twothousand and nine autobiography Wagner did admit to Breakin the wine bottlesomething he had never admitted to before. Oh because remember hisverision of events were always that him and Christopher Walkan got into apolitical discussion, so we're changing our yeah. Yes, I guess yesa little bitof a hatter, eer and Walkan does not really like to talk about the incident. He claims that on that evening and argument did break out between thecouple, so he sepped away for a few minutes and when he returned they hadmade up. I know he knows more than he's. I know I know he does. I LoveChrisopher walking, but I don't trust you here I' sorry, sorry, I don't know why he's there's probablygood reasons why he's keeping quiet, because he was friends with Natali but ROBA boy fo. I know he know shit thatwe don't maybe when Robert Boer dies iill come forward because he magnarislike eighty seven true or something yeah. So in two thousand and twelve, theofficial cause of death was changed officially from accidental drowning toundetermined, and it was decided that the obrasions found on her body musthave occurred before she fell into the water, not as a result of falling in noyeah. That get sense. It wouldn't really make sense for her to have allthose pruses jesiper trying to climb back into the boat yeah like definitelylike. Maybe some or some cut like tha. The cut on her cheek is understandablebecause she could have like script, er Cheeqell, trying to clite back on butknow all those vuses...

...very unce. Again, that's very FIS, andin February of two thousand and eighteen wakner was named as a personof interest, and the case is reportedly still open and active. So let's talk about what we thinkhappened. So I know that Nataliee's sister says that she doesn't thinkRobert Intentionally murdered her sister. Now I don't think yot wouldhave attention yeah, but that she knows things happen when people get drunk andare angry, and I think that is definitely possible. I think thecaptain hearing the Dang being Untied Really might have been Natali trying toleave and that might have made wavner so angry that he just pushed her inthat SOS like something that could be completely true, and it also soundslike something that, like cas for walking coild Ofe kept til himselfbecause, like that's, really big yeah, that's really big and it', like there'sa really good chance that he could have seen that too and lader might not even remember, because Theyha reportedly been drinking yeah, the we know how Droun flagner was.We don't know his blood alcohol content, but it was recorded that they have beendrinking bottles and bottles of alcohol at okay. So this man was sladed, WalkanWagner and wood were all very drunk therewas. A lot going, Ta Soyo mighthave no idea what happened to be honest Ike, so you think like he could haveblacked out and just I I've never forgotten anything I've done like like. I don't think that I couldcommit accidental, oh for sure, forer like being black out drunk. I thinkthat's something that I probably would remember, but I just think since he was reported tohave anger issues that surrounded him being jealous of Adali or likeNatalis relationships with her costars, including Christopher Walkin, thateially jumped out yeah. He was just so angry and so drunk could aater yeahthinking. So I think it's plausible that she was drunk enough like I saidto be trying to leave, and he just wouldn't let that happen. I can totallysee myself angry and drunk it. Just like I'M gonna put on my cut yeah andmy socks and I'll nowl pes. No, I could totally see myself doing thatcompletely wasted, but if he pushed her into the DMY, how dis the thinging, like God to the water, a maybe she was like in the process of untyingit and he just pushed her in it- just finishedthe job feeling. If you want to go so bad yeah by because that's also something Icould see someone doing like drunk out of their mind, yeah and I think himcoming back to the captain. Looking really flustered and sweaty says a lotbecause, I'm sure Oh yeah, even if he was black out drunk, he still like drunk him still probably would havebeen freaked out like I just pushed my wiy into the water she hates water. I don't think that there's apossibility that CISFOR walkin had anything to do withlike the Yeaig actual death, because I heard like maybe like one or twotheories on how he could have been like. Never der. I don't think it wasChristopher. I think he definitely knows more than he lets on and I thinkespecially the fact that theyre Ar Brucis on her arms points to wavenerlike rabbing, her and shaking her and stuff, like that, like that NIIIgrabbing her and like put pushing her in the literally Ne, I know those came from him. I can't bepositive. Look like my third eye is telling me that those bruises came fromblacder...

...yeah, and I just that's not God. It confuses me so much how the captain, who in recent years, has come forward tosay all this stuff about Wagner, didn't hear the crist for help that the Wayne Woman, who was the witness, did because like two miles away, yeah her boat, I don't know the exactdistance, but her boat was close enough, that you could hear whatwas going on, but not close othat, so pretty far yeah and this man was on theboat. So how would Christopher Walkin or the captain not hear that I don'tget that that is make e Yo o or if they did hear it and ignorative, because rover the captaindidn't put out it. What is it thistress signal eanin yeah, because he said that Wagner came to him to report her missing at aroundelenthirty and the distress call was put out at one thirty in the morning. So that's to ouats. A lot can happen in those two hours and I can't imagine theboat like they got being big enough to wear ut. Do you know how tick theapas,I don't know, but it wasn't regardless, like I feel like it wasn't big enoughwhere it would take two hours to search the entire thing like they probablylike by the time he reported like okay, I think that she's missing and then twohours later he actually put out the distress call. They had to have knowthat she wasn't there. So what was going on and those two hours they couldhave been scheming because after you realize that she's not there, your onlynext move is to call the authorities because she's obviously in the watershe's not on the boat, and what are you going to do, go out and swim? I cur. Ithink they might have there's no way in my mind that theydidn't hear Hurst creaming. Maybe the captain of the yacht did hear, and the police have just asked him not to confirm that publicly. That's theonly way like only Sanario, I can think of because again of people in a boat, so far away o could hear cries for help.I'm sure that the captain and Christopher Walkin could to I know they did unless they're in a soundproof bood inthey yaw unless the Lal Tot the Yot like inside, are like completelysoundproof there's no way they didn't hear her. You know she was so terrifiedof water, I'm sure she would have been screaming to Ma money, otherwis yeah Iwould be- and I'm not even that scarearly if I wasn't trompingbut nowthat two hours is really bothering me, because I'm on my schools, moth trial team andwe just changed our whole- a whole part of our theory for our case, becausethere was a case change where a ten minute time interval was added, and even at ten minutes, I'm like really counting on and like that. Sothose two hours are really trigkering me literally. What could they have beendoing? Scheming, platting and skeing? I O Soer up yeah, I'm sure I really dothink that maybe half an hour of that was looking for an Adali and the restwas bladkner trying to convince them that he didn't just kill his wife Le. Idon't think I don't think it was done on purpose, though I agree, I think itwas. I think if he killed her, it was just a moment of rage and heprobably didn't even realize what he had done until he had done it, and thenhe was just so scare tthat e yeah. He Freakedt Eis, like Oh, my God, but like in those two hours. Couldn'tthey have. I don't know, maybe search the water for her yeah because againwagner didn't even want the captain to like turn on the floodlights under theboat, what they wouldn't even yeah. He wanted no assistance to be...

...go. This man is not making anythinglook good for him and it's important to note. I supposethat one of his daughters, the one thatNatalie had in her previous marriage and thenRobert raised her yeah, does think that he's innocent. She doesn't think that he pushed his Momnto, the water, butagain interesting, but that's still one person and like there's a bias thereyeah not sayin that she's like wrong or likeshe's, not entitled to what she thinks happened to her mom,but just in miand again that Lewood' sister thinks that I think like we both think it happensin the heat of the moment in a fit of mange. Because again she said that sheknows things happen when people drink and they get angry. So I think I'm onthe same page as her. I think yeah pus. She knows her sister, too yeah and again her saying that her sisternever would have gone ashore in the Nigh Gown, like I'm sure she wouldn'thave solver. Now you really never know what someone's going to do when they'redrunk, especially if they're flot alcoholivels point one. Four, like Isaid I probably would have done the same thing: Yeah Nat only hadpreportedly drug through bottles of wine already so Sheyeah ther were definitely things influencingher state of mind. Okay! Well, thank you so much for listening. Let me knowwhat your thoughts in the Nataly Wood case are, and I will be back very soonto talk about John Wan Gasy. I'm very excited about that case. I alredy STI. Thank you for listening, but think you again syou guys do bye.
